The Karuna Fund

With delight, we invite you to join us in “Karuna Fund Night”. Karuna means compassion in sanskrit. A karuna gesture emulates the austerities of the Buddha, expresses our collective generosity and compassion and connects us deeply with the larger community.

How it works: The first Monday night of every month at sangha is designated "Karuna Fund Night". For this night each week, some of us choose to forgo dinner, a cappuccino, (whatever), and donate that amount to the Karuna Fund.  Some just donate! 

These funds are then given to various charitable organizations. (Sangha votes by poll for a new charity once every six months) The Buddhist Center’s general fund will match the first $1000 in donations from donors.

Our 2024 chosen charity is:  Doctors without Borders

When you donate, after you enter the amount and select PayPal or Debit/Credit Card, it will come up with the amount and “+ please add any message. Click there and Enter “Karuna Fund”

The 2023 Karuna Fund was for Feeding America - voted on by the entire sangha. Doctors without Borders was our second choice.

Before we added online participation, we supported local organizations like those below -

Lift-Up of Routt County - Through it’s food bank and assistance programs, Lift-Up provides charitable assistance, without discrimination, to meet basic human needs, while fostering self-sufficiency. - Here

Hospice of Steamboat - Hospice is a not-for-profit healthcare organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life while respecting the patient and family's right to make decisions that affect their life and death. - Here

United Way Holiday Market - The holiday market provides much needed clothing, food, and other items to people in the area identified by social services as in need around the Holiday season and onset of winter.  Many people donate toys and clothes for little children, but larger children and adults need things too.  This is where cash donations are so helpful - staff are able to purchase things for them to shop from as well.

Routt County Humane Society - The Routt County Humane Society is a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals, providing humane education, promoting spaying and neutering as a means of decreasing the number of unwanted pets, and encouraging respect for the dignity and worth of all animals.
